Shin Godzilla 2: Fans of Shin Godzilla have been crying out for news about the sequel ever since the film’s release in 2016. At the Shin Godzilla Special Screening held on September 15, 2016, in the Shinjuku branch of the Toho Movie Theatre, several actors, as well as director Hideaki Anno, were asked about the possibility of a sequel to Godzilla.
Produced by Toho Pictures, which has been working on Godzilla films since 1954, the sequel was announced and later canceled in 2018.
Shin Godzilla 2: Overview

Most people assumed 2016s Shin Godzilla would get its proper follow-up when it was the right time, but it seems Japanese studio Toho has something more prominent on its mind right now. While Shin Godzilla was quite a success in Japan, it looks like Toho will not be making a sequel to Shin Godzilla within its shared universe.
Keiji Ohta has not revealed anything concrete on that Godzilla movie universe, nor has he told whether or not they are planning to put together a writer’s room, as is the case with many American franchises nowadays.
Specifically, Japanese studio Toho is looking to build an expanded, Kaiju-filled film universe, perhaps taking us back to a time when creatures such as Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidora were featured in their films before facing Godzilla himself. Toho reportedly will not make a sequel to its mega-hit, Shin Godzilla (also known in the U.S. as Godzilla Resurgence).
Still, after Godzilla vs Kong comes out in 2020, they hope to put the King of Monsters and its Kaiju counterparts into an entirely new realm of possibilities. Once Hollywood’s sequel King of the Monsters sets up its remake of King Kong, which is due in 2020, Toho plans on turning Godzilla into the Japanese equivalent of its own Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There is not likely to be a direct follow-up to Shin Godzilla, Toho’s 2016 reboot of the Godzilla franchise, which transformed the original kaiju into a hyper-evolving, body-horror monster (meaning that we might never get to see director Hideaki Annos mysterious finale) Tohos The Godzilla franchises initial kaiju.
Toho released Shin Godzilla, directed by Anno, in 2016. Anno is also director of upcoming remakes of Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider, both of which look stylistically similar to reboots.
When is Shin Godzilla 2 release date?
Toho Pictures initially cancelled the sequel because they chose to move Godzilla toward a shared universe instead of having a singular canon of films. The trilogy’s success eventually led Toho Pictures to choose the multiverse approach instead of having one continuity for Godzilla.
Toho exec Keiji Ohta indicated that any ideas of sequels were now dead, saying Instead of thinking about doing the obvious idea of making a Shin Godzilla 2, they thought of instead making a world that could be used for a more extended period.
On July 18, 2017, Shinji Higuchi stated in his G-Fest XXIV panel that the terms of TToho’scontract with Legendary Pictures prevented Toho from producing another live-action Godzilla film until after Godzilla vs Kong was released in 2020.
While Japanese studio Toho avoids making some other live-motion Godzilla film until after 2020 due to the Legendary franchise (even though they’re loose to preserve churning out anime films), it sounds like the studio has a few initial plans for 2021.
Legendary Pictures stipulates with Toho that Japanese studios cannot release live-action Godzilla films the same year as the same-sized Legendary movie on the South Coast to prevent confusion with audiences.
Legendary Pictures is the studio that has been responsible for live-action Godzilla films, with Godzilla vs Kong being the most recent. Toho reportedly will not make a sequel to its hit film, Shin Godzilla (also known in the U.S. as Godzilla Rebirth).
Still, after the release of Godzilla vs Kong in 2020, it hopes to put Godzilla and his Kaiju buddies into an entirely new realm of possibilities.
